Checkbook Tao App Reviews

17 Customer Reviews:

No import menu item you are supposed to be able to drag and drop on the register but it doesn’t import when you do that. Glad I didn’t pay for this. This is the fourth checkbook type orogram that I have tried and can’t import anything, I am beginning the think that I should just go back to a spreadsheet, they can import comma delimited files. Glad I didn’t pay for this program. I do believe though that if I had not had so much to omport to jst do it by hand that I might have kept it. I kinda think I would have missed the scheduled transactions also which is why I have not gone back to a spreadsgheet yet but on a spreadsheet I could make a sheet that lists them and then set it up to remind me when they are do.

Just what I was looking for in a simple checkbook register except the save feature will not work sometimes or most of the time actually. Sorry to say I will be forced to delete if they cant fix this as it is no good to me if I cant save my progress. Too bad as I liked it a lot.

Ive had this software on my system for a month. Somehow ("operator error", Im sure) it fell out of sync with my online register. I emailed their support and I can not begin to tell you how helpful Joe was in helping me to reconcile the whole thing! Im unfortunately not that computer savvy, but he took the time to write out step-by-step instructions to get me back in business. EXCELLENT customer service!! The program works much like a Numbers/Excel file would. Its just a matter of keeing it up to date with correct data, and then it works like a charm!

I have been using Checkbook Tao for only a few days, without any problem. It is a simple checkbook program and that is what I wanted. I like its uncluttered interface and easy transfer of money between accounts. Also, the program lists your current balance and “projected balance”, which is helpful when you consider your expected cash flow, i.e. "plan ahead”. Another advantage: the program is not loaded with features most of us rarely use or do not need (Money and Quicken come to mind).

I am extremely happy with this software. I’ve been bouncing between, Word, Excel, LibreOffice, OpenOffice, Quicken and every available personal finance software and checkbook register available and not been happy with anything. The calculation style sheets require too much to maintain and lack the ease of use I would prefer and they’re also not the most attractive thing to work on. Finance software is just too much for my needs and it’s disapointing when you get so far only to find out certain finacial institutions don’t support it and require you to manually input those transactions for the accounts. You can generally tell right away if you’re going to like software and that was the case with Checkbook Tao. I knew right away that this was going to work and that it was just what I had been searching for. It had everything I need to maintain my balances and nothing you dont. I’ve not found any bugs or flaws and I’ve added 3 accounts and a few months worth of transactions. Application is extremely easy to navagate and use without any directions or tutorials. Very happy I found this software and have effectivly ended my search for the perfect checkbook register. Request: Can you add the abilty to input dates with a dash in addition the backslash? Also, if there was a field database being built for the “Memo” field just like there is for the “transaction Name” field that would be awesome.

Much quicker and easier to use an actual checkbook ledger. This app is only beneficial if you dont know how to add or subtract, or if you just want to conserve paper and ink.

(scott) · 12 years ago

After using this perfectly for a few months it seems to have developed some problems. When making an entry it overrides the entry to a different value! I deleted the app completely, and re down-loaded it. Same problem. Unsure what to do. Unable to reach developer bt email. Too bad, it was very nice. Update. Apparently you now have to enter a $ sign before the numerical entry. Maybe that was in an update. It works great now! :) Its nice that it lets you have more than one account that can be referenced from the same page.

Entering starting balance

How the heck do you enter a starting balance?

14jabark · 11 years ago

When I upgraded to the MacBook Pro, I discovered that my homemade checkbook spreadsheet on my old G4 was unusable. After using Checkbook Tao for about a month, I then decided to upgrade to the full version so I could take advantage of the reconciliation feature. I couldn’t be happier with the results. I know that there’s a lot of competiton out there but I liked the layout and the ease of reconciliation for a nominal price. Customer support was also fantastic and I received an answer to my question regarding the upgrade to the full version in less than 12 hours.

asuxyux · 11 years ago

It’s ok for beginners but for me it’s way too much clicking and does do any budgeting like I want it to do. i bought the full version and still not satisfied. You have to click “new entry” to enter in a new line…why not just hit the enter key and it goes down to the next line. There is no way to reconcile what has cleared….I guess I should have read or looked at more of the info on this one.

I’ve been using Checkbook Tao for over a year for several different accounts. I hope that an iPhone app will be available soon with easy synchronization of data among devices. My only major complaint is that some of the keyboard shortcuts are a bit counter-intuitive, like CMD-Return for new entry. A minor complaint is that I haven’t figured out a way to keep each year distinct. I suppose I could duplicate the file and delete previous year’s data. Also, I would like to import CSV files as well as export them. As for entering a starting balance, create an entry for it as a deposit.

I have used the free version and it was a very simple program and did what I wanted. I decided to pay for the upgrade to support there program. That was my mistake. I paid for the update and was charged in full, but the program didn’t unlock and is still asking me to pay for the upgrade. I contacted there “support” team and have had 0 zero responses in two weeks. So I will be disputing the charges, reporting this company as being a scam and not delivering on payment.

Spersfly · 11 years ago

So far this program is pretty straight forward. The only thing I wish was better is being able to +/- the date without having to use cursor. Also, would be nice to have the “find” option. Now I’m anxious to do a reconciliation.

If you are looking for finanacial software, do not use this program. I was not so here is my evaluation: I’ve used MS money for years and continue to use on a spare laptop. I purchased a Mac and I very happy form a computing standpoint. Unfortunately MS money will not run on my mac and I’m not savvy enough to run all the conversion programs to get it to do so. I’ve spent way too much money on several apps to even compare to MS money. There is a find feature in the $2.99 upgrade, which I gladly paid. I hope that a “bill” feature will be added to I will project a future balance like Money. some auto features like date and year would be nice as wel so you don’t have to type it in everytime. You need to start over for each year if you want to keep annual spending separate. I’m now retired and have the time for the details. I have yet to use the balance feature, which is what makes Money a dream. I suspect it is not as sophisticated. I dread going back and forth from PC to Mac just for banking…Tao crew, see what you can do, I’d spend the $$

Got a prompt reply and an update on new things being done for 2016. I have wasted so much money on software programs that don’t reconcile your account. HELLO this is accounting 101 but a feature add on for Money Tao for a small charge and soo worth it. I’d have given it an additional perfect score if you could import a QXF or CVS file into the program. The link that will allow this is being worked on and should be a fix to look way forward to if you’re a power debit card user that’s a really important feature. Another feature I’d like to see is tags that let you show Medical Expenses and sort for year end reporting.

Delores204 · 10 years ago

UPDATE: I have been using this program for two years now and still like it overall. One major improvement that NEEDS to be addressed is the ability to track amortized loans within the program. Right now there is no option for that, just an opening balance and that’s it. So, over time your balances will be off from actual giving you a distorted perspective of your overall budget. Seems like this would be a simple addition, but developer seems to have stopped responding to anything. I switched to this program for keeping track of my money after Quicken decided Mac users were 2nd class. I like that it is reasonably priced and that it does 90% of what I want it to. Needs to include support for importing QFX files from websites. Recent update says that one can import CSV files, but I’ve had no success doing so.

Apple silicon compatibility

I am being informed by Apple that this app will no longer work beginning with OS 28. Will Checkbook Tao update this app to work with the upcoming/new OS system?

Junk

Just purchased this and I cannot add amounts to anything, pure junk, refund my money!!

Basic and functional

I had quicken for many years. It finally got too clunky so I switched to moneydance. Alas, money dance works badly for me on the venture system. So I am now trying this program. So far, so good.

Reliable and worth it

I have been using this program for 9 years to track my bank and credit card accounts. It is extremely useful to keep track of current and future expenses, and for keeping track of automatic deposits, interest payments on checking accouts that need to be reported to the IRS each year, and transfers between accounts. I only wish there was a version for IOS that would cross connect to this Mac version through the cloud, so I could easily enter expenses in my iPhone or iPad and have them show up in the Mac version. Otherwise, it is perfect for my needs and very useful for tracking and planning.

Was good but now out of date

UPDATE: I have been using this program for five years, and intitally it worked just fine. But as time has gone on, the app has not and I am frankly in the market for a new one. The app does not really support the importing of information from your bank or credit cards--it says it does, but I have never gotten it to work consistently for me. No option for cloud saving or iOS integration, which these days is a deal-breaker for me. I would also like to see loans include amortization so the running total is actually accurate.

Love it and worth way more than what I paid!

I manage 9 accounts with Checkbook Tao and love it! Great functionality... Its autofill for the Transaction Name column speeds data entry. It can sort by date or date-range on any column. The simple to use Filter Register tool provides detailed (print-friendly) date-range summaries by any Transaction Name (saving LOTS of tax preparation time) and exports to a CSV file with a couple of clicks.

Basic But Great

Basic checkbook app. Has seach and sort features. Does exactly what I need it to do. Well worth giving them $2.99 for it. It makes it so easy to keep up with my account. Can use it for multiple accounts if you need to. Is more than just putting in your transactions and getting a balance.

Rip Off

Used for free app for a few weeks and then went ahead and purchased the upgrade for $2.99 and the app never upgraded. Warning don't purchase.

CheckBook Tao

I love this app. It is easy! The only down side is I wish I could also use on my I Phone. Maybe this can be updated. But thanks for a great program Jeff

Weak Weak

I used Quicken Starter Edition 2011 for years. After I purchased the MacBookPro I found out that Quicken is now charging a yearly fee. So I tried my luck with Tao. Very sad to discover you can't split the transition even thu they said you can. And there is no catogories list. So basically you can't print a report under a catagory didnit even try printing anything. I was hoping for more. This probram isnt for me.

Small package…great app

Good app. I paid for the upgrade and it works good. I only wish they made this for Linux becuase I am about to go to linux when my imac quits but that will be a while. Cool feature, if you have multiple accounts and want to transfer meny from one to annother go to one and for the account pick one outo f the drop meny with a @ symbol infront of it it puts the same transaction in opposite soi t is a transfer of funds. Very fast loading, and never crashes. I only wish it had a Re-occurring payments section but then it would be a bigger program and less fast. It’s not really that big a deal to add them myself. These kinds of apps are getting far and few between. Most of them don’t work right but this one is a keeper. No it’s not Microsoft money but most people really don;t need something that involved.
